When the lining of the intestines becomes irritated, it causes food to travel through at a much faster rate which doesn't allow enough time for the water to be properly removed from what is being digested.

When the intestines remain irritated over time, it causes the lining to thicken and become inflamed.

Tissue cells and blood which would normally fight virus's and pathogens accumulate within the lining of the inflamed intestines, which can cause pain, colic, cramping and diarrhea.  As the intestines are inflamed it makes it hard for the body to absorb essential nutrients from the food which can lead to other issues.

Depending on which part of the intestines are affected, you will see different symptoms.  If it is the beginning section that is involved, your pet may vomit or be fussy with food or lose their appetite.  When the lower sections of the intestines are involved, you will notice loose stools, straining to defecate, watery mucous, sometimes with blood, which is often also given a diagnosis of colitis.  It is also common to have inflammation in both the upper and lower part of the intestines simultaneously.  These issues can be ongoing or occasional.

Ongoing loose stools inflame and irritate the anus causing scooting, which can also be mistaken as an issue with the anal glands.  Your pet may also be hunching over and straining to defecate which can also be mistaken for constipation.  It's important to keep a watchful eye on your pets behaviour and toilet routine, and yep, you guessed it, take a good look at any stools your dog passes and take note.  If your pet has had issues for 10 days or more then it's possible that IBS, IBD or colitis could be the cause.

There are many factors that can cause/trigger IBS symptoms, with one or more triggers that cause flare ups such as:

  • allergies

  • food intolerances

  • lack of fibre

  • pathogens - bacteria, virus', parasites

  • anxiety/stress

  • over eating

  • use of antibiotics or medications

  • change of diet

Slippery Elm Powder is very effective and can be used to line/lubricate the stomach, intestine and large bowl.  It has a soothing effect on the whole digestive system and can be mixed into food by mixing (1/4 teaspoon for small animal 1/2 teaspoon for large animal) with water until a runny custard consistency is achieved.  This mix can also be syringed directly into the mouth of the animal.
